I've been around more than one block, seen software trends come and go, and I'm now jaded and crusty and hard to impress. But the now-famous open source content management system called Joomla definitely impresses me.Here's why Joomla is dominating in the content management space:1. It is free.I am still amazed at this. Joomla is a big product with an enormous feature set. The man-hours it must have taken to create this system is mind boggling, and my hat is off to those who have managed to herd all the cats that put it together.2. It is open source.Joomla development is driven and directed by Open Source Matters, Inc., a non-profit organization. Their commitment to open source is almost unparalleled, in my opinion. In fact, if anything, I'd argue they go a little overboard. But their commitment has truly benefitted the user community, so who am I to argue?I will say that, all things being equal, I will take an open source project over a proprietary one. Who among us has not been held hostage by a vendor at some point? At least with open source, we can make the changes we need ourselves (or hire it done if we're not programmers).3. It is a mature and stable second generation productJoomla isn't perfect, but bug fixes and enhancements are frequent and comprehensive. As I alluded to before, the core feature set is huge and the product is quite usable. The latest major revision (1.5.x) included significant improvements in usability, too. The extension of programming language C to create C++ is obtained by adding classes to C. This is why C++ was initially called "C with Classes". The C++ programming language derives its name from the increment operator used in C, which increments the value of a variable. These languages have been designed to give a better machine efficiency, i.e. faster program execution. Examples of programming languages falling in this category are Assembly Language and Machine Language. </li> </ol> C++ stands in between these two categories. That's why it is often called a Middle level language, since it was designed to have both: a relatively good programming efficiency (as compared to Machine oriented languages) and relatively good machine efficiency (as compared to Problem oriented languages).Getting Started with C++ ProgrammingCommunicating with a computer involves speaking the language the computer understands, which immediately rules out English as the language of communication with computer. However, there is a close analogy between learning English language and learning C++ language. The classical method of learning English is to first learn the alphabets or characters used in the language, then learn to combine these alphabets to form sentences and sentences are combined to form paragraphs. Learning C++ programming is similar and much easier.Therefore, instead of straight-away learning how to write programs, we must first know what alphabets, numbers and special symbols are used in C++, then how using these, constants, variables and keywords are constructed, and finally how are all these combined to form an instruction. A group of instruction would be combined later on to form a program. Character SetCharacter set is a set of valid characters that the language can recognize. A character represents any letter, digit or any other sign. C++ has the following character set:Letters A-Z, a-zDigits 0-9Special Symbols space + - * / ' " ( )[ ] etc.White Spaces blank space, horizontal tab, carriage return, newline etc.Other Characters, C++ can process any of the 256 ASCII characters as data or as literals.The alphabets, numbers and special symbols when properly combined form constants, variables and keywords. Let us see what these are:- <ul> <li> Constants: Constants are data items that never change their value during a program run. C++ programming language allows several kinds of constants. </li> <li> Variables: Variables are quantities that may vary during program execution. Variable names are names given to locations in the memory of computer where the value is stored. </li> <li> Keywords: These are the words that convey a special meaning to the language compiler. Keywords are the words whose meaning has already been explained to the C++ compiler. The keywords cannot be used as variable names because if we do so we are trying to assign a new meaning to the keyword, which is not allowed by the computer. Examples of keywords are if, void, for, switch etc. </li> </ul>Data Types in C++Data types are means to identify the types of data and the associated operations to handle it. In C++ data types are broadly of two types:- <ol> <li> Fundamental Data Types: These are predefined to the C++ language itself. there are at least five fundamental data types. <ul> <li> char- represents that the declared variable of this type can store characters </li> <li> int- represents integers </li> <li> float- represents floating point numbers </li> <li> void- represents valueless data </li> </ul> </li> <li> Derived Data Types: These are constructed from the fundamental types. I will not give you the details here because this is a bit high-level.</li> </ol>Instructions in C++ Programming LanguageNow that we seen the different types of constants, variables and keywords the next logical step is to learn how they are combined to form instructions. <ul> <li> Type declaration instructions: to declare the type of variables used in the program. Eg:- int num; Here a variable num is declared of type int(eger). </li> <li> Input /Output instructions: to perform the function supplying input data to a program and obtaining the output results from it. Eg:- cin>>a; cout In the first line input is taken from the keyboard by the function cin and is assigned to a pre-declared variable a. In the second line 'Hello' is printed using the function cout. </li> <li> Arithmetic instructions: to perform arithmetic operation between constants and variables. Eg:- c=a+b; Here c is assigned a value which is the sum of the variables a and b. </li> <li> Control instructions: to control the sequence of execution of various statements in a C++ program. Eg:- if (a>b) func1(); Here it is checked whether a is greater than b, if it is, then program execution goes to a user defined function 'func1'. </li> </ul>The first C++ ProgramArmed with the knowledge about the types of variables, constants, keywords etc. we would write down our first C++ program.Each instruction in a C++ program would comprise of a series of statements. These statements must appear in the same order in which we want them to be executed.The following rules are applicable to all C++ programs no matter ho long or complicated they are<ul> <li> Blank spaces may be inserted between two words to increase readability of the statements. However, no blank spaces are allowed within a variable, constant or keyword. </li> <li> Usually all statements are entered in small case letters. </li> <li> C++ has no specific rules for the position at which a statement is to be written. <div> 				Not long ago, a friend of mine sent me an email asking for my opinion on whether a site he was developing should be done using Wordpress, LAMP, or ASP.NET. I've used all of those, but have always been so focused on the details and learning them that I never really thought about the great question of "What technology should be used for a given site?". That is such a good question that I decided to put my thoughts on paper and help provide some education to others.Some people don't have the skills and ability to actually be able to choose the most appropriate technology. They know one thing and that is going to have to be made to work in all cases. That's not necessarily bad, but it's nice to be able to switch between technologies based on the type of site. The important thing to realize in web site development is that one technology does not fit all.WordpressI have several web sites currently running Wordpress. I originally thought of Wordpress as just a blogging platform. While that is certainly its main use and what it is optimized for, you can definitely use it to create a more "traditional" looking web site. It is very configurable and there are tons of custom plug-ins available that can allow you to add RSS feeds, SEO tags, voting, etc. Since Wordpress is developed using PHP and MySQL, it is also possible to create your own plugins and customize your site template. Oh, and that's the other incredibly awesome thing about Wordpress -- the templates! There are literally thousands of free Wordpress templates available for download. If you can't find one that fits the theme of your site than you aren't looking hard enough.Another nice thing about Wordpress is that you can easily find web hosting providers that support Wordpress. In most cases, you can click an install link and have Wordpress properly installed on your site in a few seconds. Then you go to the Wordpress admin console and configure your site. It is all very easy. You can upload multiple templates and easily switch between them. It is also easy to make minor changes to the templates (like changing tag lines, colors, etc.).The other benefit of Wordpress is that it is a blogging platform and the search engines love blogs. You can configure your Wordpress install to automatically ping one or more blogging services whenever you add a new post or page. That way they know your site has changed and they should come index your site again. If you want your site to be found then using Wordpress as the underlying engine is a good option.LAMPIn case you don't know, LAMP stands for Linux-Apache-MySQL-PHP, which is a very common and powerful set of technology components used for building web sites (and did I mention completely Open Source and free!). If you want complete control over your web site, then LAMP is a good option. There are plenty of examples, free scripts, etc. available on the web site to help you get started. There are also plenty of free editors and tools to help you along. The downside of LAMP is that it is hard for you to create your own development "environment". Since most of us run some flavor of Windows as our desktop operating system, we would need to use something like VMWare or Virtual PC to create a virtual machine running Linux. The next challenge is getting all of the components properly installed. While the installers for the LAMP components have definitely improved, they still don't compare to the ease of installing a Windows-based application. The next challenge with LAMP is debugging. It would be nice if we all wrote perfect code, but the reality is you need the ability to debug. There are PHP debuggers available. A good one is going to cost you some money though.One of the best things about LAMP is that there are TONS of web hosting providers out there for you to pick from. The reason is quite simple -- LAMP is completely open source, so it there is very little cost for the hosting company to bear. That means more margin for them!ASP.NETMicrosoft's contribution to web site development is ASP.NET. You can use any .NET language (C#, VB.NET, Python.NET, etc.) to develop an ASP.NET based site. In my opinion, the best thing about ASP.NET is the fact you can use Microsoft Visual Studio for you development tool. Visual Studio is the best tool out there. Yes, it costs money, but you definitely get what you pay for. The other nice thing about ASP.NET is that you can easily develop on your Windows-based desktop or laptop.It is harder to find a good ASP.NET hosting provider. Believe me, I've looked! And I've used several different ones. The ASP.NET providers lag behind the LAMP providers in terms of what they offer. You also need to be careful and really understand what the provider means by things like "host unlimited # of domains". In many cases they just mean you can have an unlimited # of domains point to your single web site. That probably isn't what you want.I mentioned the use of Visual Studio before. That tool is awesome and makes development SOOOO much easier. I did quite a bit of development using LAMP and got some sites up and running. I used Eclipse with a PHP plug-in and it worked pretty good. I didn't have Apache running or Linux, so couldn't really debug but I still managed. When it came time to create a more advanced web site, however, I quickly decided to switch over to ASP.NET and use Visual Studio. Debugging was a snap and the coding was made much easier thanks to Intellisense and Visual Studio's ability to "import" web services and make them easier for me to call from my code.Making the Right ChoiceEach of the technology options has pros and cons. If you want to get a site up quickly and it will be displaying basic information (text, images, video) then Wordpress is a great option. The main advantage of using n-Tier is that the complexity associated with the business and the process is reduced and it is easy to work with. The elements of performance, scalability and future development issues need to be considered when deciding on the architecture of the application depending on the priorities required.The n-Tier application has three tiers or layers - they are called the presentation tier, the business tier and the data tier. Each layer interacts with the layer directly below, and has a specific function to perform. Presentation Layer is responsible for displaying user interface to either programmer or end user. Programmer uses this layer for designing purpose and to get the data back and forth. In ASP.NET it includes ASPX pages, user controls, server controls and sometimes security related classes and objects.The Business layer works as a mediator to transfer the data from the presentation layer. In the three tier architecture the data access layer is not made to interact with the presentation layer. The architecture in ASP.NET includes using SqlClient or OleDb objects to retrieve, update and delete data from SQL Server or Access databases and passing the data retrieved to the presentation layer in a DataReader or DataSet object, or a custom collection object. The Data layer gets the data from the business layer and sends it to the database or vice versa. This layer is further divided into two sub layers Business Logic Layer (BLL) and Data Access Layer (DAL). DAL is responsible for accessing data and forwarding it to BLL. In ASP.NET it uses SqlClient or OleDb to retrieve the data and send it to BLL in the form of a DataSet or DataReader. BLL (Business Logic Layer) is responsible for preparing or processing the data retrieved and sends it to the presentation layer.The Data layer gets the data from the business layer and sends it to the database or gets the data from the database and sends it to the business layer. In ASP .NET it is an SQL Server or Access database. It can also be Oracle, MySQL or even XML.In an ASP.NET n-tiered architecture web pages do not make direct calls to the database. It really depends on what kind of template you are trying to build, in some cases they are available for free download. Some examples of this would be free Joomla church templates or free Joomla education templates, if this is what you are looking for no need to build it yourself! However, let's talk about making your own template for now. The JTT Template Toolbar Tool stand alone plug-in and a standalone server, preferably Movamp 1.0 or Movamp 1.5. I have tried a lot of Joomla Stand Alone servers and for now Movamp seems to be the be one of the industry. The reason you will need a standalone server to build your Joomla template is that since Joomla is an online web based CMS you will be at the mercy of your internet connection. Working offline will be a lot quicker and more productive. It is also better to work offline than being online on a live production web site where you client and the whole world will see you make errors as you develop the site live...however, it is still possible if you choose the "site offline" setting in the global configuration settings, this will make the site only visible to you or however is logged in. For template design only the super administrator should have access to the site.Do you really need Dreamweaver? While Free Dreamweaver Templates are nice to have they are not always necessary, Well...the Dreamweaver extensions make it a little more intuitive than the JTT Template Toolbar Tool tool, however both the extensions and the JTT Template Toolbar Tool do the same job. If you are using JTT Template Toolbar Tool you can use any HTML editor that you need, even notepad will work for that. NVU portable is not a bad editor to use to build Joomla site even if it does have it's shortcomings like any editors around. How do you use and install movamp? Well that is pretty simple, simply unzip and click on the Joom2 go orange icon. This will start your Joomla site automatically in Internet Explorer by default. Give it at least a minute or tow to boot up as it takes time for the virtual server to start. Some settings are also available to set the default browser to Firefox but since I use Firefox portable I let it start in Internet explorer, minimize IE and work on the site in Firefox since it can handle the firebug extension and the Chris Pedric web developer extension.			</div>

Either way, you will have to know how to add the Google analytics code to your Joomla site.The most important part of adding Google analytics code, is finding where to put the code so that it will appear on every page of the site. This is relatively easy, but it does require you to understand how to modify the HTML of the default template in the administration section of your Joomla installation.The first thing you will need is an account with Google. This article assumes that you already have an account set up with them and know how to access the code that will be added to your site. Once you have logged on to your account, copy all of your Google Analytics tracking code. Paste it in a text program and save for future reference.Next, login to the administrator area of your site. Go to Extensions > Template Manager. Select your default template's check box and then click "Edit". In the template edit page, click "Edit HTML". This shows you your template's index.php page. Select all of the text, copy it and then paste this into a text program which you should save in a safe place in case you do any damage to the original document.Now, go back to the original file, and scroll down to the bottom of the page. The second to the bottom line should have the end body tag which looks like a forward slash followed immediately by the word "body". Paste your code just BEFORE the end body tag. Click "Save".You have now placed the Google Analytics code on every page of your Joomla site. Keep in mind that if you change templates, you will need to add this code, using the same procedure, to your new template.			</div>
