A quick lesson on blogs for those that may not know. A blog is and updated version of what you may have know on the world wide web pages a few years back as a guestbook. The guestbook "posts" allowed anyone to comment on that page and later it started to be called a "web log". The word "blog' was born from that. Today, blogs have taken the next step and allows comments on posts to be a "thread' of sorts that bloggers (as they are known) make their comments on other people's comments. So it becomes a discussion without borders or limits. This can be good and bad. Blogs are almost everywhere and many times blogs have actually become an entire website - mostly for individuals.

Back to the title questions; why would you want to have or for that matter participate in a blog discussion? Have you ever stood around a vending machine at work and joined the current discussion already under way by a few others standing there? Most of us have and it's usually because we feel we have something worthwhile to contribute to the subject at hand. A blog discussion is very much the same. Except that it is written and people from all over the entire planet can contribute to the content of the discussion.

It has become a sort of "Wiki". The definition of a "Wiki": A Web site developed collaboratively by a community of users, allowing any user to add and edit content. The well known Wikipedia is a great example of this in action.

Blogs can be used by people who want to GET input from others on any subject they desire. Blogs can be used by people who want to GIVE their own knowledge to others on a particular subject. There are blogs that review products, blogs that are "how to" on any subject. You can do a search for blogs by entering a subject like dogs in to the Google search box and then add the plus sign followed by the word blog. When you search this way you will have search results of a couple hundred thousand blogs that are all about dogs. Do you like dogs? Do you like shoes? What do you like?

As you can imagine a subject, you can bet there is a blog discussion. Some people keep up with blogs using what's call a really simple syndication method referred to as RSS feeds. Many blogs have these RSS feeds and it allows you to subscribe to those feeds so that for example in your Outlook program you can instantly know when ever there is a new blog post on a blog you are following. Then you can jump right and comment back with your own post or simply just read them or ignore them - you choose!

There is mush more I could write about blogs but I'm saving my ideas to write in my own blog. Have you answered the question yet. Is having or participating in a blog for you?
