Design your own website? It sounds scary to most people, but it doesn't have to be! It is a simple process and there is no reason whatsoever to be frightened. You can learn everything you need to online before ever having to show someone. Often the fear of something comes just from not knowing what to do or what steps to take, so here are 5 steps to send you on way to web design success.

  1. HTML. If you've been trying for a while to design your own website, then chances are you have found out about HTML. If you want to see some, just move your mouse to the top of the screen, click View, then click Page Source. Looks scary doesn't it? It is one of the simplest programming languages to learn. HTML is your website, so you must know at least a little about it. Check Google for thousands of HTML tutorials.

  2. Software. If after learning a little of HTML you might find yourself asking, "Is there a better way to design your own website?" Guess what? There is a huge amount of software programs to help you skip the HTML side of things and focus more on the actual design. Instead of spending hours and hours on coding, you can put your attention to content creation, layout, promotion and more important things.

  3. Domain name. This is just the address of your website. It will be in the format of: http://www.yoursite.com. You get to choose the domain you want, but only out of the ones left. Before you start worrying, let me tell you that there are thousands of domains for you to look at. I'm just saying that you can't go and register http://www.google.com because it's already taken. While you design your own website, it's a good idea to keep the domain in mind, for you it will look best if your logo, domain and general text of the website are congruent. Check godaddy.com and cheap domain names.

  4. Promotion. It's a thing called Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and this is one of the main things to keep in mind as you design your own website. Google has these bots called 'Spiders' which crawl the internet and find sites for their search engine. What is on your site will affect where it ranks in the search engines. You want your site to be ranked high because high means more traffic and more money (or more whatever it is you want/selling). Keep it in mind while you design because you don't want to have to change it all again. Check Google for some SEO tutorials.

  5. Hosting. This is rather simple. It's basically where your files are stored after you put in the time to design your own website. The main thing is you want the servers to be up for the most time so that visitors can see your page.

In the end it's a simple process when explained. With a little help you can definitely design your own website.
