Today most website require a bit (or a great deal) of JavaScript, and it's unlikely you'll find much success with your favorite sites if you have JavaScript disabled.

Of course, there are times that you'd just as soon not deal with the extra features of a site, and if that is the case, disabling JavaScript might be something you prefer to do. Fortunately, whether you're enabling or disabling JavaScript, you can do it easily enough in the same spot in any of the major browsers.

ENABLE OR DISABLE JAVASCRIPT IN INTERNET EXPLORER

Internet Explorer 9, or IE9, has a nice functionality that makes it simple to make changes to your settings, and this includes JavaScript options.

1. In your window of IE9, click on the Settings menu that appears to be a widget in the upper right hand corner. It looks like a gear. Once the Settings menu appears, select Internet options at the bottom.

2. The Internet options menu will appear. Within this menu, click on the tab title for Security. The Security tab will open.

3. Inside the box near the bottom of the Security settings, there is a Custom level button. Click on that button to open the more detailed security features.

4. Inside the box for Custom security settings, scroll down until you find an area that lists Scripting. This area will be near the end of the list as the list is arranged in alphabetical order according to the area of the options.

Once you have found Scripting, you have the option to either Enable or Disable active scripting languages. This would be the JavaScript you're trying to turn on or off. Simply select the appropriate button to turn the scripting language on or off, and then click on OK at the bottom of the box.

You may be prompted to confirm your changes and select Yes in that box if it appears.

When you're returned to the Settings box, click on OK one last time to finalize the change to your system. If you just turned on the JavaScript settings, you should be able to refresh the webpage you're working on and see the script working correctly. On the other hand, if you just disabled the JavaScript you can expect your web pages to lose functionality when you refresh the page.

ENABLE OR DISABLE JAVASCRIPT IN FIREFOX

Disabling or enabling JavaScript is straightforward in Firefox as well. To change your settings in regard to JavaScript inside Firefox, start by selecting the Firefox button at the top left corner of your screen.

1. Once you've opened the Firefox menu, select Options and then Options again. (If you have the Menu Bar enabled you won't see a big orange Firefox button. Instead, click on Tools then Options.)

2. Inside the Options menu, you'll see tabs for various choices. Open the Content tab and then look for the selection pertaining to JavaScript.

3. There is a checkbox next to the words Enable Javascript in the Content section of the Firefox Options. Leave the box checked to enable JavaScript and to let it work in your browser, or uncheck the box to turn off Javascript as you see fit.

4. Once you've checked or unchecked appropriately, click on OK to close the Options menu.

Refresh your webpage. If you've checked to enable JavaScript the page will now be working correctly. If you've unchecked the box, in effect disabling JavaScript, the website you're viewing will likely lose some functionality, and may not work correctly. To turn JavaScript back on, simply revisit the Options menu and check the box again.

ENABLE OR DISABLE JAVASCRIPT IN GOOGLE CHROME

As Chrome is a minimalist browser, enabling or disabling JavaScript is as simple as finding the correct menu option and making a quick change to your settings. To do this, you'll first have to identify the symbol that represents the menu.

1. In the top right corner of your Chrome window, look for a symbol that looks like a three horizontal lines. Click on this button and the list of menu choices will appear. Click on Settings near the bottom of the list.

2. Once you've opened the Settings menu, scroll to the bottom and opt to "Show Advanced Settings." Look for a cetegory called Privacy. Under that, there is a button for Content Settings. Click on the Content Settings box and a new window will appear.

3. In the window that appears, you'll see a list of options you can manipulate. Look for the JavaScript settings.

4. Once you find the JavaScript settings, you have two choices. To enable Javascript in Chrome, simply click where it says to Allow all sites to run JavaScript. If you'd rather not have JavaScript enabled, you will disable it by clicking on the option that says Do not allow any sites to run JavaScript.

There is no need to click OK or Save in Chrome because your options are automatically saved in the browser. You can immediately test your new changes, in fact, by refreshing the website you've been looking at. If the page loses all of the banners and some functionality, JavaScript has likely been disabled. If the page is working correctly, but wasn't a little while ago, you have enabled JavaScript again.
