Joomla is a Content Management System (CMS) which is open source that we can edit and we develop. Joomla is designed specifically to provide facilities in penggunaa, maintenance, and management, for ease of management, which is why Joomla demand by many people.

In this article will discuss about how to install Joomla on our PC using XAMPP in Ubuntu 10.10. Before we enter the installation phase, there are some things we should do. First we have to install XAMPP in our PC, how can be seen in the previous post "How to Install XAMPP in Linux". Then download the Joomla files from the website or click here (ver 1.5.22).

After both of these have been done, now we are ready to install Joomla on our PCs.

First you must first activate XAMPP is installed, open your terminal and type the following command.

$ sudo /opt/lampp/lampp start

Then open nautilus with root permissions, type the following command to open it

$ sudo nautilus

Then copy the Joomla file that has been downloaded into the folder /opt/lampp/htdocs. Usually by default Joomla file that has been downloaded is in the directory Downloads. After that extract the Joomla files by right click and select Extract Here.

After the extraction process is complete, rename the existing folder with the name you want, in this tutorial the author gives the name "pesmion".

Back to the terminal, press CTRL + SHIFT + T to open a new tab and type the following command.

$ sudo chmod 777-R /opt/lampp/htdocs/pesmion

This command is used to change the permissions of our Joomla folder to be accessible by everyone. This is especially useful when we want to change some files in Joomla.

After that, open your browser and type in http://localhost/pesmion, then the installation page will appear. The first page is the page Choose Language, on this page select the language according to the language you master, by default we can choose English. Click next to continue.

The next page is the Pre-installation Check, here will be checked on the minimum requirements to perform the installation. Click next to continue.

The third page is the License page, on this page just click next to continue.

After that the Database Configuration page will appear, on this page fill in our XAMPP configuration database, by default we can fill in accordance with the picture below. Click next to continue.

On the next page is the FTP page, on this page we can fill it if we install Joomla into a webhosting. Since in this tutorial we only install it in your PC (offline), so we can skip this page. Click next to continue.

After that will attend the Main Configuration page, here we fill in the name of our website, email and password as admin. Click the Install Sample Data button as well. Click next to continue.

Now we have come to the last page of the installation process, in here we are required to remove the Installation folder of our web folder.

Back to sudo nautilus, go to our Joomla folder and delete the Installation folder, right click and select Move to Trash.

After that we can click Sites button to instantly view our web site page views, and the Admin button to view the first entry admin.

Here is the view from the admin page.

Here is the display of web pages.

OK that's for the tutorial. Thanks for stopping by and reading the posts on this website, hopefully this info is useful for every one who need it.
