If you want to switch to Ubuntu, the worst thing you can do is to delete your hard drive and install Ubuntu. This will most likely lead to a bad experience. The best way is to do a gradual move to a new operating system like Ubuntu.

The first thing to do is to download the applications that you will be using on Ubuntu. Since these applications are open source they will work in Windows and Mac as well. Try out various open source applications and start using them in your current operating system. Realistically if you hate the applications, you are not going to enjoy Ubuntu.

A simple thing you can do with Ubuntu or other versions of Linux is to use a Live CD. This means that you can preview the operating system without actually installing anything to the system. Download the various versions of Ubuntu like Kubuntu and Xubuntu and other versions of Linux and run them off the CD. Take a day where you just use a certain version and find out what you feel is easy or difficult. Do this from time to time. Eventually you will begin to feel more comfortable with the environment of your choice.

If using Windows, download a program called Wubi. This will automatically install Ubuntu to your system and turn your machine into a duel boot machine. This means when you turn it on you have the option of using Ubuntu or using Windows. This means that you can still switch back and forth for things that you are still not completely switched from the Windows side.

If you enjoy what you see, keep using it. If not you have other options. There are many other versions of Linux or you can just go back to your previous operating system. In this process you might end up picking up a few open source applications that will replace things you already use because you happen to like them more.

Using various Live CDs and eventually installed with Wubi is one of the best approaches.
