An Excel tutorial on line is an easy example of a win in the search for business productivity.

When thinking about business productivity one area that is often missed by businesses is the use of online training courses. These courses can prove very effective at improving your employees learning speeds.

Faster learning speeds are another way of saying that employees will become productive more quickly. Instead of an employee wasting time trying to figure out how to use a program themselves why not teach them.

A training company will tell you that to learn through an Excel tutorial that it's essential for your employees to go on a day or even a week long course to learn the program. They'll then tell you that they can offer a discount if you send several employees and take Word and PowerPoint at the same time.

This often results in a large quote for the training and as a result the training never happens. The employee is left to struggle on their own.

A training company will show you the return on investment and how this doesn't make sense but they forget that you still need to find the money! However there is another way to improve the situation.

You don't need to pay for basic training. Instead make use of the free resources available on the internet. There are lots of them. Find a course that your employees can work through at their pace.

There are a few things you should think about if you want to follow the free web based course route.

You should find a site that covers more than one product. Even although your current need might only be an Excel tutorial you should think ahead. Find a site that has an Excel tutorial, a Word tutorial, a PowerPoint tutorial and a Microsoft Project tutorial.

These four programs are what I think of as the minimum set of programs that an employee might need. Sure there are others but these four are generally in business the core material used.

Once you've found a web site you like, you need to examine the courses. If the web site has courses that go on for lots and lots of pages then I'd suggest that it isn't the right place. What you need is a site that provides a quick understanding of the basics. You need something that will get your employee able to use the program quickly.

A feature that I like to look for in courses is a real world problem being solved. I think this is far more encouraging for employees than something that simply takes you through every feature one by one. Instead I'd search out courses that give examples that might work in your business.

Finally when looking for a course I'd make sure that the basic version is free. Most web sites should be prepared to offer a free version of their material. Start with the free stuff and if that doesn't work then pay a bit for the courses. I'd also stick with just one website for your training. You want to develop all your staff in the same way not using different courses.
