There are various operating systems that you can choose for your web hosting nowadays and two names that you will always hear about is the  Linux  and Unix system. These two systems have a very similar name but there are some differences when you break down into small details. By knowing the differences, you will be able to know which of this operating system will suit you better.

If you are operating a small to a medium size organization, using the  Linux  OS will be suitable. The number of users increased slowly because Unix was the only solution that they can use before this OS was introduced.  Linux  was only used for academic purposes in the beginning because developers are not looking into the networking aspects of web hosting but all of that changed in a matter of few years when the system was made mainstream as it is supported by a huge circle of developers from all over the world. That is why it has turn out to be to be the favourite choice for web servers and office computing applications. But with Unix, users will be able to get better efficiency as it is able to handle multiple processes simultaneously.

As for the cost and distribution for these two OS, users will be able to use  Linux  for free because it remains as an open-sourced program. Therefore, users will only have to bear the expenses for their servers. Due to this matter, this operating system is constantly modified depending on the distributors that distribute them like Fedora, Mandrake, SUSE and Red Hat.

As for Unix, users will have to pay in order to use it. It is not free like  Linux . A package that includes hardware and servers, it will cost anything from $25,000 to $500,000 depending on the quality of the serve that is chosen. This cost is not small and it is not affordable to small business owners. That is why the users of Unix are mainly made up of large corporations. With the choice of using a free OS, many online webmasters will opt for  Linux .

The improvement in  Linux  happened in a fast pace over these past few years if we compare it to other operating system that we can find on the market. The increase of solutions for this OS in the market is also another sign of signalling that the popularity of this type of operating system in on the rise. In order to be more competitive, vendors likes HP, IBM and the Sun are releasing more customization features and capability so that this OS can be more compatible with the  Linux  system. This is to increase the number of users that will consider this system over the others that are available out there.
