Linux is an Operating System based on Linux kernel. The great combination of free and open source software makes it a perfect OS and the source code can be used, modified and distributed commercially and non-commercially. If you are a programmer you can just modify the whole OS as per your tastes as it is an open source and even make money out of it. Linux has vast range, from embedded devices, mobile phones to mainframes and super computers. This wide range of hardware compatibility makes Linux the most affordable and dependable operating system in the present day where every other competitors in the market are not so good.
There are two types of interface available for the users namely Command Line Interface(CLI) and a Graphical User Interface(GUI).While the command line interface needs the user to interact using command line, the graphical user interface is easy to operate even for a new computer user. In the recent years the number of applications available for the Linux Operating System are vastly increasing and even sometimes competing to that of the Microsoft Windows and Apple Mac OS X.
In general the desktops are equipped with Linux that has a Graphical User Interface Environment. The most popular of GUI are GNOME and KDE both of which support wide variety of languages. Linux has also has several good benchmarks with the fastest boot time, fastest execution of a particular program of a specific language and so on and so forth.
Due to the availability of the Linux in Open Source and can be easily modified these are mainly used in embedded systems. Linux is an alternative for Windows CE and Palm OS in the particular market. The number of devices using Linux has been increasing rapidly. Thus, Linux is proved to be the best in the market.
