In this article, I have decided to take a different twist and write about people who have made significant strides on the internet. These stories are geared towards encouraging you that any idea has the potential of generate an income online. People often prefer to hear stories of other people who have created successful businesses online as opposed to expert opinions on the subject. Reading successful stories of ordinary people who have achieved extraordinary internet business success is always propitious.
As you read these stories of success you will realize that what they all have in common is seized opportunity. These people studied the market and saw an opportunity to capitalize on. The ideas they implemented seemed silly at the time to ordinary men however these individuals never gave up and went on to make millions of dollars on the internet.
First on the list is a teenage girl who started a website called whateverlife.com that is designed to provide free Myspace layouts and HTML tutorials for people in her age group. This idea seemed unsustainable at the time, I mean who would design free layouts for people and not get anything out of it? Ashley Qualls is laughing all the way to the bank because her website which is supported by advertising revenue rakes in $1 million in Google AdSense and around $70,000 every month. The website receives more traffic than the combined circulations of popular teen magazines Seventeen, Teen Vogue and CosmoGirl. Qualls turned down an offer of $1.5 million to acquire her company.
Second is Markus Frind, CEO and Founder of PlentyofFish Media which is an online dating site developed in the 2003. He started the website as an exercise to teach himself a new programming language, ASP.net. The website became popular in Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, Brazil and the United States earning him $10 million a year in advertising revenue. The website attracted 5.3 million visitors on February 2011. Plenty of Fish website is supported by banner advertisements, Google AdSense and affiliate marketing links. Markus makes $10,000 a day from Google AdSense alone. He recently posted a photo of an AdSense cheque for $901,733.84, which Google confirmed as being genuine.
Lastly, I had to save the best story for last. Yun Ye, a Chinese American began acquiring domain names before people even knew what they were. He began building his collection after graduating from the University of Maryland in 1998. He acquired his collection from expired domains that were never renewed by previous owners. In the year 2000, Yun Ye's portfolio of domain was earning him a whopping $19 million in net profits of the $20 million annual revenue. In November 2004, he had a portfolio of 100,000 domain names which he sold to Marchex for an astronomical figure of $164 million. The interesting bit is that Yun Ye is extremely private and he agreed to deal with Marchex on condition that they never mention his name. The name Yun Ye was adopted by Marchex executives to refer to the deal made by the company.
